
Demand for growing media is expected to double or quadruple by 2025, creating concern that peat moss and coir (coconut husks) as substrate materials might become hard to source. Plumas Wood Fiber (PWF) is conducting growth trials with wood fiber substrates of residual forest biomass that is left from wildfire mitigation. PWF is 1 of 12 finalists chosen to test innovative ways of dealing with wildfires that affect Western North American Forests.
PWF is looking for horticultural professionals who are interested in participating in growth trials to test potting substrates made from/with excess forest biomass.
January 2026, three grand prize winners will be selected for further support. Follow PWF’s study below.
